Overcoming Stage Fright: The 5 signposts

Using these signposts you can calm down even the most challenging case of nerves and win a more peaceful inner place for yourself in performance.

1) "Reduce your Expectations"

Don't put so much pressure on yourself to do a great job. Trying to get it "perfect" is a sure way to set yourself up for anxiety and"failure". Keep your expectations simple. Just do the best you can and next time you will be better at it.

2) "Contain your Inner Critic"

That voice in your head that is constantly judging how well you are doing is keeping you self-conscious. There is no way to enjoy the experience or to drop into the material with all that negative chatter going on. So cage your inner critic at some far corner of your psyche where you can't hear it. Breathe and enjoy the freedom you get from being able to be free of that stress!

3) "Visualize it going Well"

In order to overcome the physical and emotional memory of past embarrassing performances spend meditative time EVERY DAY visualizing the smooth and enjoyable performance you are about to give.

This may be hard at first. Do it until it feels natural and you can truly FEEL the possibility of things going well for you! It works for star athletes and it can work for you.

4) "Invest in Your Material"

Investigate the emotional terrain of the material you are going to perform. FEEL what it's about for you and really let it speak to you and take you over. The deeper you can drop into that experience the less the fear will have a place to get a toe hold.

5) "Embrace Your Fear"

Accept that you will be scared. It is a good thing to feel exited and have some adrenaline pumping through your system. Then you are ready for anything and able to respond quickly to suprises.

So don't let the fact that you are feeling some fear make you think you can't function. Keep in mind that you are going to get through it whether you are scared or confident, ·its just more fun when your confident.

And remember that it takes a lot of experience to make a seasoned pro at public speaking or singing. Almost nobody comes by it naturally so
keep at it!

..just "do the best you can........... and next time it'll be better!".
